Dental Health

At NorthPaws Veterinary Center we work closely with our patients to promote proper oral health and prevent dental problems through the promotion of proper home dental care, the use of dental radiographs, and the implementation of regular professional dental cleanings and exams. Dental disease is one of the most common problems affecting cats and dogs, and if allowed to progress, it is not only painful, but it can lead to other serious health issues.

Common signs of early dental disease:

  • bad breath

  • yellowish-brown patches of tartar on the teeth

  • red or enflamed gums

  • decreased appetite or difficulty eating/chewing

  • loose or missing teeth

Included in each Professional Dental Cleaning

  • a full sedated oral exam

  • digital dental radiographs

  • ultrasonic scaling to remove all traces of tarter

  • polishing of each tooth surface

  • extraction of any damaged or diseased teeth

Regular professional dental cleanings can not only correct current dental problems, but they can also significantly decrease the likelihood of your pet developing costly, painful, and potentially life threatening health issues later on.

The Importance of Digital Dental Radiographs

Dental radiographs are a key part to every professional dental cleaning as they allow us to see what is going on beneath the surface of your pet's teeth and gums. Previously, it was only possible to detect disease in teeth that were too far gone to save, thus requiring multiple extractions. Through the use of our state-of-the-art dental radiograph unit, our doctors can identify teeth that may not show damage on the surface but which are at risk for developing problems down the road and  are likely causing your pet some discomfort.
